Beef: Social Issues - Conclusion
While one could argue that the beef industry does not differ from many other industries in failing to take responsibility for its environmental impact and in particular, its effect on climate change. It stands out, however, in its willingness to tolerate unsafe work environments that lead to human injury and death. More than a century ago, Upton Sinclair exposed the corruption in the industry and the disparity between the haves and the have-nots working within it. It is unconscionable that over a century later, conditions still exists in which people must silently accept inhumane conditions in order to bring home a paycheck while the companies they work for prosper. All the more reason to consider dropping beef from the menu.
