Simplify the Holidays 2009: Lasting memories, without the trash or cash

Contest Guidelines:

We asked New Dreamers to follow the guidelines below.

For under $10, create an ornament, centerpiece, garland, menorah, any other seasonal decoration using one or more of the following:

  • Trash (bottle caps, cardboard, used paper, glass, etc.)
  • Food (dried fruit, popcorn, etc)
  • Flora (Pine cones, dried grasses, palm leaves, etc.)

Send us a photo and step-by-step construction instructions using the form below. See rules for participation*.

Submissions will be judged on creativity; ease of replicability is a plus.

Winners will receive a water bottle. Honorable mention will get a “More Fun Less Stuff” bumper sticker.

Upcycled Holiday Decoration Contest Rules:

New Dream Upcycled Holiday Decoration Contest: Official Contest Rules
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR TO WIN. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL AND MUNICPAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS APPLY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

Eligibility. The New Dream Upcycled Holiday Decoration Contest is open to all legal United States residents, who as of October 13, 2009 are at least 18 years of age and have a valid e-mail account. Employees of New American Dream, immediate family members of, and any person domiciled with such employees, are not eligible. New American Dream is not responsible for contest line failures or errors in any promotional graphics or advertisements. Winner must be in compliance with all contest rules.

Method of Entry. The New Dream Upcycled Holiday Decoration Contest begins on October 13, 2009 at 6 a.m. EST and all entries must be received via online entry at www.newdream.org/holiday/contest.php  by 11:59 pm EST on November 16, 2009. Each entry must include your name, valid email address, a photo of the decoration upon which the entry is based, and a list of instructions and materials required to create the decoration shown in the photo.  Individuals may submit as many entries as they wish.  However, each individual is eligible to win only one prize, regardless of the number of entries submitted.

Selection of winners. Five Grand Prize winners will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of New American Dream staff members and announced on or about December 1, 2009. The decision of the judges in all matters related to the selection of the winner and all matters relating to this contest are final. Entries will be judged based upon creativity, completeness of instructions, and how well the decoration makes use of repurposed materials to create a low-waste decoration.  (Entries that rely heavily upon store-bought materials are discouraged.)

One Community Choice Prize winner will be selected by online vote, open to the public, from among the five Grand Prize entries.  Voting will open once the Grand Prize winners are announced (on or about December 1), and continue until December 7.  The winner will be announced online immediately following the close of the voting, and the winner will be notified via email.

Odds of winning depend upon the number and quality of eligible entries received.

Prizes.  Each of the five Grand Prizes winners will receive one (1) 27-ounce Klean KanteenTM stainless steel water bottle.  The retail value of a each Klean Kanteen bottle is $19. In addition to the Grand Prize he or she receives, the Community Choice Prize winner will receive a set of four (4) ACME BagsTM“Workhorse” brand reusable bags from ReusableBags.com.  The set of four ACME Bag Workhorse reusable bags is valued at $20.
Restrictions:  No prize substitutions, cash equivalent, or transfer of the Prize is permitted, except by the New American Dream.  New American Dream reserves the right, at its discretion, to substitute a prize (or portion thereof) of comparable or greater value in the event of circumstances beyond their reasonable control. 

Winner Notification and Acceptance. Winners will be notified via email on or about November 24, 2009 and may additionally be announced in the New Dream News electronic newsletter on or about November 24, 2009. Winners will be solely responsible for reporting and payment of any taxes, fees and damage deposits, as well as all other costs associated with claiming the prize. There shall be no prize substitutions. Winners will be required to complete an affidavit of eligibility and a liability and publicity release (except where prohibited by law) which must be received by New American Dream within (7) days of the postmark. Failure to sign and return the affidavit or release within seven (7) days, or to comply with any term or condition of these Official Rules, may, at the sole discretion of New American Dream, result in a winner’s disqualification, the forfeiture of his or her interest in the prize and the award of the prize to an alternate winner.

Participation: Entries that include content that violates the rights of third parties (including, but not limited to, rights of copyright) will be disqualified. Participants grant New American Dream the right to use their names in advertising and promoting the contest without further compensation. Submitted ideas become the property of New American Dream and New American Dream has the right, but not the obligation to use the ideas for cause related marketing. By participating, contestants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges. New American Dream reserves the right to disqualify persons found tampering with or otherwise abusing any aspect of this contest as solely determined by New American Dream. In the event the contest is compromised by tampering or other causes beyond the reasonable control of New American Dream which corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness or proper operation of the Contest, New American Dream reserves the right in its sole discretion to suspend, modify or terminate the Contest. Should the Contest be terminated prior to the stated expiration date, New American Dream reserves the right to award prizes based on the entries received prior to the termination date. All decisions regarding disqualification of entries shall be in the judges’ sole discretion. New American Dream is not liable for lost, late, delayed, damaged, incomplete, misdirected entries, email or transactions that are lost or for failure to receive entries due to transmission failures or technical failures of any kind, including, without limitation, malfunctioning of any network, hardware or software, whether originating with sender or New American Dream. In the event of a dispute, all email entries will be deemed to have been submitted by the owner of the email account from which they were sent. For these purposes, an email account holder shall mean the natural person assigned to such email account by the Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with such email account.

Limitations of Liability. By entering the Contest, entrant agrees that all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or in connection with the contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually without resort to any form of class action; any claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of–pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering the contest, but in no event attorney’s fees and under no circumstances will any entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental or consequential damages and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased and any other damages other than damages for actual out of pocket expenses.

Construction. All issues and question concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these official contest rules, or the rights and obligations of any contestant and New American Dream, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Maryland, without giving effect to any choice of laws or conflict of law rules or provisions that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Maryland. In the event that any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provisions were not contained therein.

General Release. By entering the Contest, contestants release New American Dream and its agents from any liability whatsoever for any claims, costs, injuries, losses or damage of any kind whatsoever arising out of or in connection with the Contest or with the acceptance or possession of any prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses or damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to, loss or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light). By participating in the Contest, the participant acknowledges that New American Dream and no other entity is solely responsible for the conduct of the Contest.

Sponsor. The New Dream Upcycled Holiday Decoration Contest is sponsored by New American Dream, whose decisions regarding the selection of winners and all other aspects of the Contest shall be final and binding in all respects. New American Dream will not be responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Contest Rules or in other materials related to the Contest.
