About the Break the Bottled Water Habit campaign
In October 2007, nearly 14,000 New Dreamers took the pledge to break their bottled water habit, reducing more than 46,000 pounds of carbon emissions in one month. That same month, we published our first edition of the Responsible Purchasing Network’s Guide to Bottled Water—our most popular RPN guide to date. We decided to take our work a few steps further and launched a multi-year campaign designed to Break the Bottled Water Habit at both the individual and institutional levels.
In doing so, we have partnered with Corporate Accountability International, a great organization that has been working to get individuals and cities to Think Outside the Bottle. Together, we asked folks like you to take this pledge:
I pledge to Break the Bottled Water Habit by Thinking Outside the Bottle and using a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. I also pledge to support the efforts of local officials to stop spending public funds on bottled water and prioritize strong public water systems over bottled water profits.
New Dream and Corporate Accountability also will be working with mayors around the country to develop policies and action plans that will eliminate the use of taxpayer funds used to purchase all non-emergency bottled water.
Why bottled water? Water affects every single one of us. Over the past decade, bottled water consumption has skyrocketed in the U.S. The ironic thing is that in that same period, our tap water systems have continued to improve. So drinking bottled water isn’t about safety, it’s about corporations redefining what constitutes "good" water. Their definition, unfortunately, is false. The Center for a New American Dream has always helped you be the most conscious consumer you can in order to protect the environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice. By helping you break the bottled water habit, we will continue to uphold that mission.
