Sometimes the best way to encourage the local retail sector is to start small, be creative, and think outside the (big) box!
Popuphood is a small business incubator in Oakland, California, that collaborates with local entrepreneurs, property owners, and the city government to revitalize local neighborhoods.
Small retailers "pop up" in vacant spaces and are granted up to six months of free rent — after which they have the option to stay permanently and sign a long-term lease with the property owner. If they choose not to, another pop-up retail takes their place.
Watch the video to meet the folks behind popuphood and the retailers who have found success as a result of this innovative model!
